Volunteering in North Lanarkshire

CentrePoint GowkthrappleWith the support of Community Links Scotland, Garrion People’s Housing Co‑op (GPHC) and their project partners Gowkthraple Organisation for Leisure and Development (GOLD) have been successful in securing approximately £47,000 from the Scottish Government’s People and Communities Fund and £9,000 from the Voluntary Action Fund’s Volunteer Support Programme to employ a volunteer co-ordinator for 18 months to establish and implement a volunteer development programme.

Whilst the programme will focus mainly on the community of Gowkthrapple, it will also explore opportunities in the neighbourhood of Forgewood in partnership with Forgewood Housing Co-operative. The programme will target all ages of participants recognising the benefits of volunteering to provide a platform for learning for young and unemployed people and a means of promoting active citizenship amongst older people. The approach that will be taken through this volunteering project will be to combine practical and relevant training with support, supervision and front line work experience, all essential to deliver lasting benefits. This will provide a means for people to gain skills, contribute to their community and, when relevant, for them to discover routes to training and employment.

The additional volunteering resources identified and supported through this programme will also help GPHC, GOLD and other local delivery partners to expand the services and activities on offer in Gowthrapple’s CentrePoint community facility.

The recruitment process is currently underway for the volunteer co-ordinator and we look forward to sharing future news on the progress of this programme.
