Streetlinks Investing in Volunteers and Training

May, June and July have been very busy “gala day” months for Streetlinks and Streetlinks Volunteers.  Events taking place during this time:

  • Woodhall Gala Day – Inverclyde
  • Barmulloch – C in the Park Gala Day
  • Helensburgh Highland Games
  • Cadder Gala Day
  • Summerston Gala Day
  • Lomond Shores Fundraising Day
  • Bowling Gala Day

The work of Streetlinks was supported by 13 volunteers carrying out  51 volunteering tasks, giving 400 front line service delivery hours, for events that had attendance levels of approximately 1670.

All of these gala days enabled Streetlinks volunteers to gain learning experience in delivering frontline youthBarmulloch Community Day work services. Streetlinks utilised the mobile climbing wall, the mobile multi-use games arena and a plethora of street games resources; face painting and nail bar also proving to be very popular during these events!

In addition, four volunteers who wish to gain experience within the office setting provided CLS & Streetlinks services with over 200 hours of support enabling them to gain administrative skills, increase their working knowledge of administrative  systems and providing crucial work experience within an office setting. One of these keen young volunteers has  succeeded in gaining a position on a Modern Apprenticeship for one year with Streetlinks. A big welcome and congratulations to Caitlan Gillen on her new position with Streetlinks!

Training

Streetlinks is continuing to invest in our pool of volunteers who generously give their time and skills to help with the delivery of the frontline youth work service by providing them with relevant training to increase their knowledge and skill base.  This quarter there has been a street games course, introduction to streetwork course and LEAP Gang Violence Training.

Streetlinks are developing the Training and Volunteer Development department this year by becoming an SQA accredited centre and ready to deliver the PDA in youth work and SVQ in volunteer skills.  We are expected to go “live” to deliver these awards by August 2012.

In addition, throughout the year there will be many courses that will be offered to enable you to access some free and subsidised courses. The calendar of events will include:

  • Sports leader Training
  • First Aid
  • Glasgow University – Activate course
  • Introduction to street work
  • Streetlinks streetgames
  • Child protection & diversity

We are currently devising the timetable for this and it will be published and distributed in due course.
