Kerrera’s Old School Gets a New Lease of Life

Oban based social enterprise Stramash use outdoor education as a vehicle for personal, social and local economic development. Following discussions with Argyll and Bute Council and the island community, Stramash recently secured a long term lease on the old school building on the rugged wee island of Kerrera just off Oban.

The building has lain empty for 15 years and Stramash have a vision of transforming it into a small residential centre that could be used to help deliver the aims of Stramash as well as providing some local employment opportunities. Stramash have also secured funding to help them to carry out a feasibility study, prepare architects drawings, a business plan and a funding strategy for the project and we were delighted to be appointed to assist them in this exercise. We are equally pleased to be working alongside award winning Scottish architects Dualchas Building Design, who have a track record of designing buildings which are not only sustainable and ‘responsible’ but also have a very sensitive fit with the local landscape. Our work will commence with a questionnaire to all potential local services providers and referral agencies as to what they would hope to see encompassed by the project together with some early discussion with the Lottery as to the most appropriate potential funding stream to support the development of this exciting project.
