France, Here We Come!

It was hot, sticky and hard to tackle in one go! No, not an oversized helping of sticky toffee pudding but the sponsored hillwalk undertaken by the Ten2Ten group a couple of weekends ago!Ten2Ten walk Kilpatrick Hills

Ten2Ten were planning to head out to West Dunbartonshire’s twin town of Beauvoisin in France this summer as part of their French exchange programme. Streelinks hosted the French visit last year and this year; it is the chance of our young people to head out to France to be treated to a taste of their culture, food and, hopefully, good weather! The group were working hard to raise funds towards paying for the trip; their efforts have included bag packing, cake sales, helping at Helensburgh Highland Games, a sponsored cycle and the sponsored hill walk in the Kilpatrick Hills.

On a hot sunny Sunday, supported by Christine and Jana from CLS and youth worker Lisa, the group tackled the steep escarpment up from Old Kilpatrick, then across the deep heather on the moor (where we spotted a baby deer) up to the trig point on top of the Slacks. The views to Glasgow and down the Clyde estuary were amazing; we could also look back at Doughnut Hill, the hill we climbed when the French young people were with us last year. It was a perfect place to stop for a picnic lunch. We then walked right round the Greenside Reservoir through bogs and an area with loads of butterflies (luckily not midges!). We were all tempted to stop and swim in a burn we had to cross but only TeeJay tried it! We had to climb back up a bit and then dropped back all the way down to the cars. Legs were like jelly but everyone felt a great sense of achievement and we raised just over £100 to put towards the trip!Ten2Ten at the top of Kilpatrick Hills

The good news is – Dunbritton Housing Association have agreed to front fund the cost of the travel for the Ten2Ten trip until we have all the funding in place. Ten2Ten are very grateful indeed to Dunbritton for agreeing to this; the group have been able to book their flights and are now on their way to see their friends! We’ll be posting updates of their trip on our Facebook so keep checking it for more details.
