Centre 81 Garelochhead – One Year On

On 2nd March, Centre 81 in Garelochhead, a community and outdoor education facility, celebrated its first birthday. Community Links Scotland have been working with the Route 81 Youth Project since 2006 to secure funding for the redevelopment of the old Garelochhead Youth and Community Centre into a facility capable of meeting the needs of the communities of Garelochhead and Portincaple, with dedicated facilities for the area’s young people.  We raised approximately £1.6 million towards the capital costs of the building and have supported Route 81 throughout the build project in drawing down their grant funding.

The Centre opened to the public on 2nd March 2011 and has now firmly established itself in the local community with well-used facilities such as a gym, IT suite, cafe and youth hub.  There are also facilities for outdoor education, activities and residential stays, including a climbing wall, kayaking and canoeing on the Gare Loch with direct access from the rear of the Centre, and climbing, abseiling, hill-walking and orienteering in the surrounding local area.

Community Links Scotland continues to work with Centre 81 to source additional revenue funding.  Staff attended their first birthday celebrations on 2nd March which were well attended by the local community, local councillors and members of other community development trusts in the Argyll area.
